Being a February baby myself (the 3rd, to be exact), February is one of my very most favorite months - aside from my birthday, it also contains Groundhog Day (silly!), Valentine's Day (sweet!), and it means that Spring is just a hop-skip-and-a-jump away (AWESOME)!
Its a unique month - the only one with fewer than 30 days. The word "February" comes from the Latin word "februum", which means "purification", but some other historical names for the month are Solmonath ("mud month"), Kale-monath ("cabbage month"), and my favorite "Helmikuu", which is Finnish for "month of the pearl" (describing the way that frozen water droplets form 'pearls' on tree branches).
Amethyst is February's birth stone. In Greek, "amethyst" means "intoxicated" - in ancient times the stone was believed to protect its wearer from drunkenness. Medeival European soldiers wore amethyst into battle for protection and cool-headedness. In fact, amethyst is a variety of the silicate mineral Quartz. It gets its coloration (which can range from light green to deep purple) from impurities in the mineral.
